Last week I was at Starbucks, working away, when I stopped for a moment to check my voice-mail.
I was intrigued by one of the voice-mails and I had to listen to it twice to be sure what I was hearing.
It was a cold call!
A woman that I did not know had left me a message. And her message was so professional and intentional that I called her back.
Are you surprised? Think back, I bet you have called someone back you didn’t know who left you a voice-mail from a cold call.
It is unfortunate that cold calls get such a bad rap these days. The telephone can be an incredibly fast way to connect with people that you could potentially do business with that you don’t yet know. And yet, many people let fear and limiting beliefs stop them from picking up the phone.
Who would you call if you knew they would call you back?
So let me get back to the story. After I received the voice-mail from the Sales Professional, I called her back immediately. She answered, and we proceeded to have a very nice conversation about what she offers and whether or not she could help me. It turned out that there were two ways she might be able to help me and I asked her to send me a proposal. Ten minutes later, a proposal landed in my inbox.
I know that I am not the only person who has had an experience like this. In fact, a lot of Entrepreneurs and Sales Professionals make successful cold calls every day. Cold calls that get results.
You are probably wondering what she said that made me call her back. It was pretty simple. She left her name, phone number and how she could potentially help me. By focusing on a problem of mine that she could potentially solve, I was motivated to call her back (She did her homework!). And, she left clear instructions on how to reach her and when she was available. EXACTLY WHAT I TEACH MY CLIENTS!
Here is the lesson in this for all of us:
· Cold calling can be a successful way to connect with your Target Prospects.
· Remember to be intentional when calling.
· Expect successful results!
Action Item: Think of an individual or company that you really want to connect with. Make it your intention to call them this week prepared to explain the problem that you solve and how you could potentially help them. You might just be surprised at their response!
I was impressed with the proposal that the woman sent me. I hope that I get to do business with her this year because I definitely think she can solve one of my challenges. Imagine who might be waiting for your phone call right now!
When was the last time you made a cold call? What was the outcome?
