Zig Ziglar is one of my all time favorite motivational speakers and authors. He once said, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.” I definitely believe that and I know it is one of the reasons I have been able to successfully continue to grow Sales Coach Now over the years.

But what does it mean to really help someone? And what are the ways we can do that in business?

I remember going to hear Zig speak when I first launched my business. I thought about that quote afterwards, and I knew it made sense, but I really didn’t understand what he meant until years later.

Helping is all about receiving, and most of us aren’t good at receiving help. We love to give it, but we are lousy at receiving it. I have found that my ability to give help has grown proportionately with my ability to accept help. As Entrepreneurs and Sales Professionals, we tend to isolate ourselves, which is the worst thing that we can do. You can’t grow your sales alone in an office, you have to be out with people. When I am out, connecting with people, and asking for help and giving help, my business grows. When I am isolating, my business stagnates.

So, what are all the ways that we can give help to others? Before I share those ideas, I just want to remind you to give without expecting anything in return. When you give, amazing things will happen in your life and your business, but they don’t always correlate directly with what you have “put out there”. Be open minded about what is going to show up!

Ways you can help your clients:

  • Laura Bruno, owner of The Referral Institute Southern California, teaches that we can help our clients by introducing them to a prospect or a potential Referral Partner. This is an excellent way to help your client or prospect and show them how committed you are to their success.
  • Extend an educational opportunity (purchase the ticket on their behalf) to your clients or prospects that could improve their business in some way.
  • Send your prospect or client a book or magazine subscription that you think will make a difference in their business.
  • You can help your clients by offering your products and services that solve their problems. When you are Selling with Intention, your client’s best interest should always remain in the front of your mind! Which product or service that you offer makes the most difference?

Action Item: Make a list of 5 prospects or clients you can help and how you are going to help them. By when will you take this action? Add a date next to each line.

Whenever my business isn’t going the way I want it to, I shift the energy by finding someone I can help. I don’t do it with any expectations, but inevitably I feel better and my business begins moving forward again. Zig Ziglar also said, “People don’t buy for logical reasons. They buy for emotional reasons.” Show your clients and prospects how much you care, and I have a feeling that they just might buy from you.
